A fun morning at the beach.

Identifying birds during their fall migration is challenging because they all sort of look alike. But on reflection, this is a Bay-breasted Warbler.

 

Tis the season when the backyard birds need to start putting their heads on a swivel because look who's hungry. Cooper's Hawk.

If I were a hummer I'd absolutely be a sit and sip kind of guy, not one of those flap your wings fifty beats per second while feeding types. Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Sometimes when you go out to look at the Ospreys, it turns out the other way around.

Not only did we see our very first Least Bittern after all these years of looking, we saw three of them in one day. (This adult and two juveniles). Then, to top it off, the adult caught and swallowed a frog right in front of us. Felt a bit bad for the frog because all he wanted was a high four but ended up being lunch.

I've watched similar scenes play out dozens of times but I'm always amazed by the Double-crested Cormorant's ability to swallow large fish in a single smooth gulp. Photo 5 gives you an idea of how big that catfish was. And let's not even think about how those thorny fins must feel on the way down. Or out.
