The backyard birds didn't seem to mind the big snowstorm but they sure do spend a lot of their time and energy keeping an eye on the sky for predators. You don't realize how much they keep their head on a swivel until you see them up close. Here we have Northern Cardinals, House Finches, Dark-eyed Juncos, a Mourning Dove and Goldfinches.

Here's why Tufted Titmouses sometimes don't show much of a tuft....A submissive Tufted Titmouse lowers its crest, sleeking it down like a skullcap when interacting with dominant birds. Juvenile Tufted Titmice, which have lower social status than adults, often keep their crests down when the more dominant adults are around.
