Watching Ospreys catch fish is a fun way to spend a few hours. Their speed, power and accuracy are amazing to witness and when they nab a plump goldfish like this one it's a nice bonus, visually, as the orange really pops against the drab background. But when you add the element of someone like this Double-crested Cormorant trying to steal that goldfish, it really starts to get pretty cool.

 

Even though I know Mallards are omnivorous, it was still a bit weird to watch this one gobble down a fish.

It was a surreal stroll through the springtime snowscape yesterday.

 

I knew this Great Blue Heron saw me kneeling in the snow behind a log but I was pleasantly surprised that, instead of slinking away, it started moving closer to me. It caught a fish every couple minutes and, eventually, it was 30 feet away where it nabbed this little white perch. It was cool to watch this sequence at close range.

Since female House Finches prefer to mate with the reddest males, I imagine this fella will have no problem getting lucky in the procreation department. Females (second photo) are considerably less vibrant.

While this Canada Goose had its wings and back end churning furiously to create spray for its shower, that penetrating stare never wavered from me and it was a little bit disconcerting.

 

Herring Gull spears a catfish then wrestles it ashore where the eating is easier.
