Here we are in Barkerville (about an hour drive from Quesnel), a town that was built during the mid-1800s gold rush and restored as an interactive historic site in the 1960s. It captures the essence of the era nicely and leads you through the gold mining and refining processes that took place here along with providing a taste of what town life was like. At the height of the boom, the population was 5000 people, 3000 of whom were Chinese - the Chinese influence is very evident in the names of many of the businesses (not the brothel, though). What an awesome start to exploring the Quesnel area. (p.s. my nickname in university was Jake hence that one photo of me.)
